The BOD POD
The BOD POD is an Air Displacement Plethysmograph (ADP) that uses whole-body densitometry to determine body composition (fat vs. lean). Similar in principle to underwater weighing, the BOD POD measures body mass (weight) using a very precise scale, (accurate within a gram) and volume by sitting inside the BOD POD for two fifty second increments of air measurement. Body density can then be calculated.

The BOD POD Body Composition Tracking System uses patented Air Displacement Technology for determining percent fat and fat-free mass in adults and children. The simple test consists of measuring the subject’s mass (weight) using a very accurate electronic scale , and volume, which is determined by sitting inside the BOD POD chamber for two fifty second air measurements.  From these two measurements, the subject’s body composition is calculated.

Body composition is a key indicator of overall health. The BOD POD’s high level of accuracy in detecting very small changes in body composition (fat mass vs. lean mass) allow individuals to track their progress in regards to their fitness and/or nutrition program. This technology is used widely by professional sports teams to track their athlete’s body composition while fine tuning their athletic performance and nutritional requirements. These changes are not accurately reflected on a standard bathroom scale.

FAQ’s:

How long does a BOD POD test take?

The time in the chamber consists of two to three separate fifty second scans. A complete test, including printed results, can be accomplished in about 5 minutes. Explanations of the data by a certified technician add an additional bit of time but are part of the test and no additional expense.

What can I expect during a BOD POD test?

Testing in the BOD POD is quick and easy. The process only requires that the person being tested sits quietly in the BOD POD for the brief measurement period (no talking or laughing). You may hear sounds relating to valves opening and closing or the hum of a fan during the procedure. However, no pressure changes will be felt and difficult breathing maneuvers are not required.

What do I get from a BOD POD test?

You will receive a printed report with the following Body Composition Information:
Total Weight
Fat Mass
Fat-Free Mass
Body Fat Percentage
Body Fat Rating

Other measurements:
Thoracic Gas Volume (TGV) estimate
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) estimate
Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) estimate

How big of a person can fit in the BOD POD?

The BOD POD is designed to accommodate a wide variety of human shapes and sizes. With its generous-sized interior and oversized window, NFL and NBA teams, sumo wrestlers, and people weighing up to 500 lbs. use the BOD POD routinely.
